Pastoral Care

Pastoral care is an important part of school life

We value every student at Tauranga Girls’ College and want them to feel valued and cared for. We have a strong pastoral network to support our students.

  • The whānau teacher is responsible for all students in their whānau group. They provide encouragement, academic learning support and guidance. Relationships are based on respect, fairness, and integrity.
  • Vertical whānau groups support the interaction and relationship building between Year 9 to Year 13 students.
  • Deans have oversight of one of our five houses. They know that positive relationships are key and work to establish a positive working relationship with students and whānau.
  • Deputy Principal’s collaborate closely with their house dean and work to lead and develop strong relationships based on the school’s values of Manaakitanga/ Respect, Mahi Tahi/ Participation and Mana Motuhake/ Pride.
  • Guidance Counsellors provide personal and educational counselling and support. Where there is a need, they can refer to external agencies and seek support through community agencies.
  • The onsite Health Centre provides a service to enhance the health and wellbeing of students and remove any barriers to learning caused by health issues. First aid is available along with support from a nurse (daily) and access to a doctor (once a week).
  • The Careers Advisor provides careers advice, careers education programmes, tertiary liaison and pathways support.
  • The Learning Hub provides support for an inclusive educational environment. Students have flexible learning programmes that cater to individual student abilities, learning needs, and interests. The Learning Hub works closely with a number of community-based agencies to provide cohesive, holistic academic programmes.

Counselling and Support Services for Students

Poipoia te kakano

Kia puawai

Nurture the seed

And it will blossom

Tauranga Girls’ College offers support for students, whānau/families and staff. Counselling support can enable students to overcome challenges and foster the development and growth of important enabling skills such as;

  • Self awareness
  • Acceptance of difference
  • Interpersonal communication skills

Counsellors can provide advocacy support for members of our school community. Referral to community agencies can also be facilitated by the counselling staff if required.

Currently we have three guidance counsellors and students are able to choose who they wish to see. Contact details for each of the counsellors is below. All counsellors work within the guidelines of NZAC and are also registered teachers.

We encourage students and whānau to make contact with any challenges they may be having throughout the year.

Service and Leadership

Making a difference by leading and helping others

Leadership is both a talent and a skill for development. At Tauranga Girls’ College, our young women enjoy many opportunities to embrace and explore leadership and develop skills for future years.

Service and Leadership opportunities extend across a variety of areas including formal roles for our senior students, who are recognised as important role models.

Supporting charities and volunteering service to the local community have long been integral parts of the Tauranga Girls’ College ethos. This practice is embedded in the student leadership structures. Our girls support this custom and every year, they find new and increasingly ingenious ways of giving back. Themed mufti days are also held throughout the year to show our support for elected charities.

No matter what the opportunity, all leadership and service roles at Tauranga Girls’ College are held by young women.
